Wil Besseling (Netherlands) took the lead at the season opening Alfred Dunhill Championship at legendary Leopard Creek CC. Besseling posted first round 63 and sits at the top with score of seven under par. Keith Horne, Garrick Porteous and Pablo Larrazabal are just a shot behind and share second place at six under par. For the first time in European Tour history players were allowed to wear shorts during tournament rounds. The reason for this decision is the hot weather in South Africa and the temperatures which are expected to reach 40°C during tournament days.
First round leaderboard:
George Coetzee is one of many local favorites who will try to please the home crowds. Coetzee started strong with three consecutive birdies, but after poor play on the back nine he posted first round 73. The South African shares 63rd place at one over par – eight shots behind the leader Wil Besseling.
Pablo Larrazabal has four European Tour titles under his belt. Larrazabal’s last triumph came at the 2015 BMW International Open.
