Justin Walters leads the way in rainy England

The bad weather was the main factor at day one of the ISPS HANDA UK Championship at The Belfry. The heavy rain started in the afternoon and lead to play suspension at 14:10 local time. The rain made the course unplayable as there was a lot of water on the greens. Players were allowed to come back on the course after more than four hours unplanned break. Justin Walters was one of the players who had the chance to finish their rounds before the suspension. The South African posted opening round 64 and leads the way at 8 under par. He is three clear of a group of four players. In that group is Bernd Wiesberger who is the highest ranked player (30th) in the field this week.

As it stands at the end of the day:

Justin Walters managed to secure his European Tour card for this season in the last possible moment. He finished second at the Portugal Masters in October to move within the top 110 at Race to Dubai. His recent form is not very impressive and he missed the cut in five of his last six tournaments. Walters’s lone made cut came at the Celtic Classic where he shared 39th place.
