Local favorite Louis Oosthuizen posted first round 63 to take the lead at the 2019 Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player. Oosthuizen carded nine birdies without to lose a shot and leads at nine under par. Three shots behind the 2010 Open champion and solo second is Thomas Detry from Belgium.
First round leaderboard:
Louis Oosthuizen is still looking for his first win at the Africa’s major, although he has pretty good record at the event. In eight starts he has never been outside the top 14. In the last couple of years the South African is in contention on Sunday, but still cant close out and grab the title.
Home hero Ernie Els, who turned 50 last month, started the tournament with a bogey free 68. Ernie’s last European Tour win came in June 2013 at the BMW International Open.
Lee Westwood, who won the title last year, should be happy with the start of his title defense. Former world number one sits at four under par after day one and shares fourth place alongside Lombard, Els and Migliozzi.
