American J.B. Holmes posted first round 66 and took the lead after the opening round of the 148th Open Championship. Holmes started his round with a bogey, but six clear birdies sent him to the top of the leaderboard at five under par. Local favorite Shane Lowry sits solo second at four under par after opening round 67. A big group of 14 players, including Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Alex Noren and Tommy Fleetwood, shares third place at three under par.

J.B. Holmes last win came in February at the Genesis Open. The American has two top 10 finishes in majors. One of them became at the 2016 Open when he finished third.
Four times major winner Brooks Koepka played solid today and he is only two behind the leader.
Ryan Fox played phenomenal golf on the back nine and finished his round with six birdies in last seven holes.
