Rory McIlroy set the pace in Abu Dhabi

Rory McIlroy posted opening round 64 to take the early lead in Abu Dhabi before play to be suspended for the day due to darkness. McIlroy carded eight birdies and he sits at eight under par, one clear of Tyrrell Hatton. Fabrizio Zanotti from Paraguay completes the top three after 66 today.

How it stands after day one in Abu Dhabi:

This is Rory’s first regular European Tour event since November 2019. The world number six plays mainly on the PGA Tour and we rarely see him on the European Tour outside the majors and WGC’s.

Tyrrell Hatton entered the tournament as one of the big favorites for the win on Sunday. Hatton is ranked ninth in the world and already has three Rolex Series wins under his belt.
