Justin Thomas posted opening round 65 to take the solo lead at the 2020 U.S Open championship at Winged Foot GC. Thomas sits at five under par, one clear of Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters and Matthew Wolf.
First round leaderboard:
Before the start of the tournament Justin Thomas said that Winged Foot GC is the most difficult course he has ever played. Many of the experts were surprised by the low scoring on Thursday and the expectations now are that USGA will prepare the course for Friday with different approach so we can see more U.S Open scores. This is the fifth appearance for Justin Thomas in the tournament. His best result is shared ninth place in 2017.
Tiger Woods was going pretty well, but he finished his round with bogey-double bogey-par. As a result former world number one dropped to three over par and shared 71st place.
Rory McIlroy managed to escape the deep rough yesterday and didn’t make any serious mistakes. He carded only one bogey on his way to first round 67. Thanks to it the Irishman sits at three under par and shares fifth place alongside Lee Westwood and Louis Oosthuizen.
We don’t see often hole-in-one during majors, but to see two in one day is really rare. That’s what exactly happen on the short par three 7th hole yesterday. Both aces belong to Patrick Reed and Will Zalatoris.
