With four birdies in his last four holes Matthew Fitzpatrick took the lead after the opening round of the 30th Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Eight players, including Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau, share the second place at 6 under, only a shot behind. The conditions were perfect today at Emirates GC and most of the players took the best from them. Very good scoring today, 89 players played the course on par or better today.
First round leaderboard:
Matthew Fitzpatrick carded eight birdies and dropped only a shot today. He was happy with his performance on the course today and said:
“I just added a bit of extra length to my driver, so it’s given me a few yards to help get on in two on the last because I’ve never been able to do that. And then, just wedging it a lot better has given me a few more chances coming in…I do like the golf course. It’s tough, you’ve got to hit fairways, you’ve got to hit greens and I think it does suit my game if I’m playing well. ..So it’s nice to be able to get off to a good start and three more rounds like that would be nice.”
Very good day at the office for Sergio Garcia as well. The Spaniard carded six clean birdies and he is only a shot behind the leader Matthew Fitzpatrick.
